Upload Cinema brings the best internet videos to the big screen. Every few months we present a fresh, thematic program of captivating web films, linked to a special theme. The audience submits web films; a team of editors picks the best ones and compiles a programme of around 90 minutes from the bunch, which is screened in cinemas and on special locations.

Why are we doing this? Where can you find us? How do I start my Upload Cinema? Here, you will find answers to this kind of questions.

What is Upload Cinema?

Upload Cinema is a regular get-together for everyone who enjoys watching, sharing and making web videos. Our aim is simple: to offer a surprising, inspiring and entertaining film program every two months. We mix amateur and professional footage, brand new and historic material, high and low art, food for laughs and food for thought.

As we compose each edition around a (topical) theme, no Upload Cinema show is ever the same. Although the theme is published in advance, the content of the program (the line-up op videos) remains a secret until the evening of the screening. So, in way we offer something of a surprise program.

The audience plays an important role in our concept. Not only are our programs comprised of content sent to us by the audience, members of the audience are also involved in the process of selecting films for screening. The more videos are submitted each edition, the bigger our ‘community jury’ grows.

Everyone is welcome to visit our shows, but registering as a member has its advantages. For instance: you get priority booking tickets and receive our monthly newsletter. Besides you have a chance of getting invited to join our jury and decide which films are to be select for screening.

The web is changing film. Not only the way film content is being distributed, but also the way film is being produced and watched. The whole interactive process of making, mixing, choosing, uploading, commenting, recommending and reacting is what is truly revolutionizing the industry.

Film is becoming more and more a collaborative, social activity. But unfortunately this activity is taking place behind the computer at home or at work. Which is, let’s face it, not the best possible place to enjoy movies.

Upload Cinema wants to take this exciting new way of making and sharing film out of the domestic realm, away from the internet and the tiny computer screen and into a space that's designed for a collective experience: the cinema.

for WhoM?

Experience teaches us that Upload Cinema appeals to a very broad audience. Basically everyone from the age of 16 up. The program attracts innovators and early adopters (a young, creative media-aware audience) while also drawing the traditional art-house audience (40/50+) that knows a lot is happening on the Internet in the field of film (YouTube), but doesn’t know how to find it. In this way, Upload Cinema becomes a meeting place for different generations of film lovers.

Founders are Dagan Cohen (former creative director of communications agency Draftfcb) and Barbara de Wijn (former cinema programmer and film distributor). The central editorial team, alongside Cohen and De Wijn, consists of: Corrie Gerritsma (technology journalist), Liselotte Doeswijk (media and design researcher), Alexander de Vree (theatre maker), Elki Boerdam (graphic designer and web film fanatic), Lotte Belice Baltussen (R&D division, Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision), Serge Fenenko (Managing Director of the interactive marketing agency Novocortex and viral video expert) and Anke Hellebrand (film producer and web film afficionado).
